Step by Step
A private tour is the perfect way to visit Port Louis. The capital of Mauritius has a rich historical heritage that you can discover with an experienced guide. The activity lasts approximately 8 hours and includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, street food and entrance fees to the main monuments.
The itinerary starts from a central point, such as the Central Market. Tourists and locals come here to buy fresh fruit (mangoes, pineapples, papayas, bananas, etc.), handicrafts (such as wicker baskets), spices and street food. The following list summarises the other stops:
- China Town - A lively and colourful neighbourhood that is home to one of the oldest and largest Chinese communities on the island. It's the perfect place to eat and shop for original souvenirs.
- Aapravasi Ghat - The symbol of the island's history of immigration and forced labour. It was built in 1849 as a reception centre for Indian labourers sent to the island to work on the sugar cane plantations after the abolition of slavery.
- Mauritius Postal Museum - The museum is dedicated to the postal and communications history of Mauritius. It features a large collection of stamps, as well as equipment and machinery used for mail processing.
- The Photographic Museum - A museum that is a veritable time machine. The photographs depict the people and landscapes of the island between the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Port Louis offers a wide variety of restaurants and street stalls serving local specialities such as curries, biryani (meat marinated in a mixture of yoghurt and spices such as turmeric, chilli, ginger, garlic, cumin and coriander) and fresh fish dishes.
