Step by Step
The Odysseo aquarium was conceived as a tool to raise public awareness about the conservation of the oceans and the species that inhabit them. By purchasing a ticket, you can enter and discover the fauna that lives in the seas surrounding the island and in its inland waters. Odysseo has 45 tanks and below are the main ones:
- The coral reefs - The tank that recreates the coral reefs of Mauritius. These underwater formations are home to turtles, surgeon fish, parrot fish and butterfly fish, sea snails and invertebrates such as sea anemones and octopus.
- Inland forests - The environment is dedicated to the animals that live in the lush inland forests. Mangroves, lakes and streams are the habitat of freshwater fish, herons, snakes and lizards.
- The lagoon - Mauritius is also famous for its lagoon, a vast expanse of clear turquoise water, surrounded by white sandy beaches and protected by reefs. It is home to tropical fish, turtles, dolphins and the occasional shark and whale.
- Open sea - the realm of sharks. Here is perhaps the most impressive part of the aquarium: a transparent tunnel that runs through the tank and gives you a close-up view of these giants of the sea.
- The invertebrates - The home of the jellyfish. The waters of Mauritius are home to, among others, the Cassiopeia (also known as the inverted jellyfish) and the Velella velella, characterised by its intense blue colour and sail-like shape.
Odysseo also has a touch bath (where you can pet sharks) and a children's laboratory. The aquarium is located in Port Louis harbour, and is easily accessible by foot, car or the island's public transport system.
