Step by Step

This small group local lunch at Casa Hacienda La Esperanza in San José will allow you to get to know the typical culture and gastronomy of Costa Rica, getting into one of its historical heritages for about an hour and a half.

You will visit a colonial house located in the heart of the region, where you will experience a journey through time, back to the heyday of the 19th century.

Upon arrival you will be greeted by the owners, who will welcome you and take you on a stroll through the gardens, where you can admire the lush vegetation and beautiful mountain views.

Delicious Costa Rican food, prepared with fresh ingredients, awaits you in the main house. You can enjoy unique dishes that reflect the traditions of the locals from the flavours and aromas of the village.

In addition to the food, you can also learn about the history of the hacienda and the nation by delving into the life of the peasants and farmers of the area. The house is full of details and antique objects that tell the story of the family's milestones during the colonial era.

You'll soak in the events that marked the country, such as the 1948 Civil War, when the hacienda was used as a refuge by government soldiers. After this, the property was abandoned and lay in ruins for many years until it was rebuilt.

The owners of the house took care of all dietary restrictions, which was very much appreciated as it prevented many problems in the future.

One of the dishes that stood out for me was the Turrialba cheese with banana in honey, a delicious combination that I had never tasted before.
