Step by Step
Travel to Cuenca from the centre of Madrid and discover one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, Cuenca is known for its medieval quarter, its walled city and the two rivers that bathe it.
For around 10 hours, you will be accompanied by an expert guide, who will give you the chance to learn about the history and culture of this inland Spanish city. This tour also features a guided visit to Cuenca Cathedral .
The Cathedral was built after the conquest of the city from the Almoravids by Alfonso VIII of Castile in the 12th century. It was built between 1196 and 1257 and its construction was one of the first examples of Gothic art in Spain. During the activity, you will be taken on a guided tour of around 1 hour , during which you will learn about its history and architecture. At the end of the tour, you'll return to the Plaza Mayor square, where the cathedral is located, to sample some of the typical products of Castile-La Mancha .
Other places you will visit during the tour are the following:
- Finca La Estacada Restaurant: A well-known and elegant winery located in Tarancón, the second most populated city in the province of Cuenca. Here you can stop to stretch your legs, have a drink and take pictures of the beautiful vineyard landscape surrounding the restaurant.
- City of Cuenca: In the capital of Cuenca you will have the opportunity to have lunch and stroll around the old town on your own.
- Plaza Mayor of Cuenca: You will visit the main square, making a stop at the Cathedral of Cuenca. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, this building was one of the first manifestations of Gothic art in Spain.
- Viewpoint Barrio del Castillo: Famous viewpoint located at the top of the city, from where you will start your guided walking tour of the historic centre of Cuenca. You will pass through the Bezudo Arch and arrive at the medieval quarter of Cuenca, which, with about 1,000 years of history, is one of the best preserved in the country.
- Hanging Houses: So called because they "hang" their large balconies over the top of the rocky ledge formed by the Huécar River. These buildings were erected between the 13th and 15th centuries and are also known as Casas de los Reyes.
Today the Casas Colgadas house the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art . Together with the Cathedral and the walled city, the Casas Colgadas were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
- Bridge and convent of San Pablo: You will cross the river Huécar over the bridge of San Pablo and arrive at the convent of the same name. From there, you will be in an unbeatable position to take photos of the best views of Cuenca and the Hanging Houses, bathed by the Huécar River.
At the end of the tour, you will return to the original starting point in the centre of Madrid, as it is a round trip.
