Step by Step

This urban itinerary starts in the seaside district of Chiaia and goes up to the elegant area of Vomero, in the hills of Naples. To get to the top you have to take the funicular and the ticket is included in the price of the activity. As an added bonus, you also get free drinks and an expert guide who will tell you the history of the following attractions:

  • Petraio - A set of stairs built between the 16th and 17th centuries. It links the two quarters and is dotted with Art Nouveau villas, gardens and belvederes.
  • Castel Sant'Elmo - A castle shaped like a six-pointed star and has dominated the city centre since the 14th century. You can walk along the walkways of the old guard and admire the panorama.
  • Charterhouse and Museum of San Martino - A masterpiece of baroque architecture, it stands on a hill a stone's throw from the castle. Its present appearance is due to Giovanni Antonio Dosio, who revolutionised the original gothic construction, and to the decorations of Cosimo Fonzago.
  • Pedamentina San Martino - A picturesque street connecting Castel Sant'Elmo to Via Toledo, in the heart of Naples. Its origin is linked to the construction of the Certosa, as it was used to transport materials.
  • Corso Vittorio Emanuele - Another of the main streets that houses architectural examples of great interest such as the Aselmeyere Castle, Grifeo Park and the San Martino vineyard, a green lung with vines, olive and fruit trees.

Finally, the tour ends in the Quartieri Spagnoli neighbourhood, one of the most authentic areas of the city. Here you will find pizzerias and traditional restaurants, especially in the famous Pignasecca market. The walk takes about 2 hours, so it is ideal for those who are short on time. The itinerary is easy to follow but it is best to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
