Step by Step

The hike lasts approximately 7 hours and takes you into south-eastern Georgia, characterised by a semi-desert climate and rugged landscape. This activity is perfect for nature and history lovers, as it touches ancient Orthodox monasteries and beautiful natural sites. The price includes an expert guide, anair-conditioned vehicle and water.

This part of Georgia has no big cities. For this reason, before reaching the monastery there is a stop at Lake Kapatadze. Here you will find a grocery shop where you can buy food and water. The stop lasts about 30 minutes.

The route continues to the David Gareja Monastery, a rock-hewn Orthodox monastic complex situated on the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan. Its foundation dates back to the 6th century, when St David Garejeli, an Assyrian monk, and his disciple Lukyan moved to the area to spread Christianity. The structure comprises two neighbouring places of worship: Lavra and Udabno.

The Rainbow Mountains are a short distance away. Like their Peruvian namesakes, they are distinguished by their coloured rocks, with real greenish, red or grey stripes. Today they rise in a semi-desert area, but millennia ago they were under the surface of the sea.

Very nice excursion, although we expected something more from the Georgian Sahara. Otherwise nothing to add, we are very happy to have done this trip and very well informed about the place thanks to the guide.

The colours of the mountains are beautiful. You can't appreciate it enough in the photos, but seeing it in person is something really marvellous. I am more than happy to have done this excursion, it was an experience of 10.
