Step by Step
Get to know the castle of Azay-le-Rideau thanks to this entry. This is the perfect experience for art lovers, as you will enter one of the most important examples of French Renaissance architecture in the world. You will see both the interior of the 16th century castle and the famous exteriors.
One of the most outstanding images is the castle reflected in its mirror of water. Until the 19th century, the river ran along the south wing of the château, but a wide terrace bordered its façade. It was not until 1950 that this terrace was removed and the river branch was widened to allow the water to flow along the castle's foundations. This slows down the current and provides the characteristic image of the castle's reflection.
During World War II, the castle was damaged by German soldiers who used it as a firing range. The building was subsequently restored and underwent major renovation in the 20th century.
Today, the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau is a popular tourist destination, also thanks to its fantastic gardens in formal French style. The gardens feature a wide variety of plants and flowers, such as roses, tulips and lavender, and are maintained throughout the year.
The castle is also known for its role in popular culture, as it has been featured in films and TV series, such as the French film "Ridicule" and the miniseries "The Three Musketeers".
