Step by Step

Chicago is known, among other things, for its many imposing skyscrapers, and on this tour you'll learn about them and the influence of Art Deco. Together with an expert guide, tour the city's financial district and see buildings notably inspired by this artistic movement, such as the One LaSalle Street Building, the Field Building and the Chicago Board of Trade.

In about an hour and a half you will learn about the true symbolism and meaning of Art Deco, a style of architectural, industrial and graphic design that reached its peak in the 1920s. This tour will be done in small groups of 10 people, giving you closer attention.

Architecture and design played a large role in the construction of many buildings and skyscrapers in this great metropolis. The widely used art deco design style clearly represented a symbol of the optimism, happiness and prosperity of 1920s America. Geometric ornaments and luxurious materials were the most common elements used to embody this artistic trend.

During our tour of Chicago's financial district we will be able to see art deco buildings such as:

  • Chicago Board of Trade Building: skyscraper built in 1930 that today is dedicated to exchange financial derivatives of the CME group.
  • One LaSalle Street Building: was for a time one of the tallest buildings in the city and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
  • Field Building: was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1994. It is now an office building housing the Bank of America.

You will also enter the Chicago Architecture Center. It is a museum dedicated to the promotion of architectural design that offers public programmes, exhibitions, festivals, workshops and events related to this field.
