More about: Transfers to/from Stockholm

Stockholm is served by three airports: Skavsta Airport, which is located about 100 km south of the city, Arlanda Airport, about 45 km away, and Bromma Airport, about 8 km from the city centre. But don't be guided by distance alone. For example, Arlanda Airport is the largest and the busiest, so buying bus tickets to Arlanda Airport is probably the best option for you. Here we go!

Arlanda Airport is Sweden's main international airport - it's the largest and busiest airport in the country, so it's quite likely that this is where you'll be landing when you travel to the Swedish capital. The airport has 3 terminals, to give you an idea of its size.

Therefore, an airport that receives so many travellers also has the resources to make it easier for them to get to the city centre. Below, I'll tell you about the best options for getting from Arlanda Airport to the centre of the Swedish capital. By the way! If you haven't planned your visit yet, I recommend taking part in one of the best tours of Stockholm after you've arrived at your accommodation.

From Arlanda to central Stockholm by train

The Arlanda Express is the fastest way to get to central Stockholm from Arlanda Airport. These trains are renowned for their punctuality.

Plus, the seats are comfortable and spacious, and you'll have access to free Wi-Fi during the journey. You'll find directions to the platform at the airport itself, and then the train will drop you off at Stockholm Central Station, within walking distance of many tourist attractions and some of the city's top hotels.

Useful details

  • Journey time: about 20 minutes.
  • Price: approximately25 euros per person. The price varies depending on the type of ticket, whether you buy a voucher or a single ticket, etc.
  • Advantages of using this method: it is ideal if you are in a hurry.
  • How to book this transport: via the Arlanda Express website.

Getting to the centre of Stockholm by bus

The bus journey is slightly longer, but more affordable, so if you're not in a hurry, this option is just as convenient as the train, but slightly cheaper. This bus also has Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Another reason to opt for this option is that buses leave every 10 minutes, more frequently than trains.

Booking your Arlanda-Stockholm bus tickets in advance means you only need to show your bus ticket to the driver when you board the bus - it's that easy. Also, since there are usually a lot of people waiting for the bus, booking in advance is definitely the best option.

When you arrive at the airport, you can find the bus dock by following the signs marked Flygbussarna.

Useful details

  • Journeytime: approximately 47 minutes.
  • Price: from 18 euros per person.
  • Advantages of using this method: 24 hour service, so whatever time you arrive, you will have your transport ready to take you to your accommodation.
  • How to book this transport: you can buy online or in person at the airport before boarding the bus.

Private transport: taxi or VTC

If you want your journey between the airport and your accommodation in Stockholm to be comfortable and smooth, and you don't mind paying extra, private transport is your best option.

With a taxi or VTC service ( Uber-type private vehicles), you won't have to worry about buying tickets or missing your ride. These services are available outside the arrivals terminal. If you have booked a chauffeur service, they may be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it (like in the movies).

However, if you don't want to make the journey too expensive by booking in advance, you can simply check the VTC app you use and choose a journey, or take a taxi from the terminal exit.

Useful details

  • Journeytime: approximately 45 minutes.
  • Price: from 50 euros.
  • Advantages of using this method: you will be dropped off at the door of your hotel.
  • How to book this transport: depending on the private service you choose, you can make a reservation on their website.

Transfers from Bromma Airport

This is the closest airport to the centre of Stockholm, so if you land here, the journey to the city centre will be a short one, whichever option you choose.

This airport mainly handles domestic flights and some international flights from certain European cities. It is smaller than Arlanda Airport, but is ideal if you plan to travel to other Swedish cities, as it connects to, for example, Gothenburg, Umeå or Malmö.

If you have chosen this airport because your trip has more stops, and you are going to spend less time in the capital, you might be interested in knowing what to do in Stockholm in 2 days or less . That said, I'm going to tell you how to get from Bromma to the city centre.

Getting to Stockholm city centre by bus

From Bromma Airport, there are two bus lines, 152 and 129, which will take you to Sundbybergs Centrum, a metro station close to the airport. Both will take you to Stockholm Central Station.

If you don't feel like changing buses, you can take a Flygbussarna bus from the airport, which will take you directly to the Central Station.

There are 3 buses leaving the airport every hour, so in this case I recommend you buy your tickets when you arrive, as you will most likely have time to do this at your leisure.

Interesting details

  • Journeytime: about 20 minutes.
  • Price: between 4 and 10 euros.
  • Advantages of using this method: you can take the bus to this station, and then transfer to the metro or train, which can be taken at the same place.
  • How to book this transport: Through the website of SL, the transport company that manages these bus lines.

From Sundbyberg to Stockholm Central Station by train or metro

To get from Bromma airport to Sundbyberg station, the fastest option is bus 152. Once at the station, you have two options: take the train or the metro.

Interesting details

  • Travel time: the metro from Sundbyberg to central Stockholm takes about 13 minutes, and the train takes about 8 minutes.
  • Price: approximately 5 euros.
  • Advantages of using this method: Frequency of trains and metro is 15 minutes.

Private transport from Bromma to Stockholm city centre

In this case, a taxi or VTC will not be as expensive as from Arlanda Airport, as the distance is much shorter. If there is one airport where you can afford to take a taxi to central Stockholm without spending too much, it's Bromma.

  • Price: about 12 euros.
  • Advantages of using this method: it is an affordable price that compensates for the convenience of going by private transport with your luggage in the boot.

To get from this airport to central Stockholm, you will first need to get to Nyköping train station, which is 7 kilometres from the airport. You can get there by taxi or by bus, taking the 515 or 715. Allow plenty of time for any possible delays to your flight.

Useful tips to make your journey from the airport go perfectly

The transfer from the airport to the centre of Stockholm is just the beginning of your trip. But what about the rest of your travels during your time in the city? I recommend you buy your Stockholm Go City All-Inclusive Pass, which includes entry to numerous sights and bus and boat travel for the days you choose.

And if you want to get around the city, for example by metro, you can also get the Stockholm Travelcard, which gives you unlimited travel on the city's public transport for as long as you choose.

Rocío's Traveller Tip

Check that there are buses or trains available at those times or, if you are going to opt for private transport, leave it closed beforehand so that you don't have to worry about arriving on time later, especially on the way back to the airport.

And my last recommendation, if you are going to buy tickets as soon as you arrive at the airport, is that you already have Swedish kronor in your pocket. Although you can usually pay by card, I recommend that you already have cash in krona so that you are in the situation of having to find a place to change money before you can buy your tickets or have to pay a taxi driver. There are already places in Sweden where cash is not accepted, but it's a good idea to carry some just in case.

Great option to get to the airport without delays or stress beforehand. Although it did make me a little dizzy, it may have been due to the distance from our hotel. Recommended.
