Step by Step
With this activity you can visit the historic centre of Cáceres accompanied by a local guide. The itinerary lasts approximately 2.5 hours and includes both an audio guide and a tasting of typical products at the end of the tour. The following is a list of the highlights of the route:
- Plaza Mayor - The centre of the city since the Middle Ages. Its origin is linked to the persecution of the Jews, who were forced to live outside the walls and settled in the area of the current square.
- Bujaco Tower - Symbol of the city and viewpoint par excellence. Its name is thought to derive from a mispronunciation of the caliph of Seville: Abú-Ya'qu.
- Catedral de Santa María - The most important church in the city. Originally built in Romanesque style, it was rebuilt between the 15th and 16th centuries and now has Gothic and Renaissance elements.
- Palacio de Carvajal - Easily recognisable by the tower from the Almohad period (12th century). Gothic and Renaissance styles are mixed in its architecture.
- Plaza de San Jorge - An urban space presided over by the beautiful Gothic church of San Francisco Javier and the Casa de los Becerra, a Gothic palace. The square is dedicated to the patron saint of the city.
- Museum of Cáceres - Traces the history of the city, from the Bronze Age to 20th century art. It is housed in two historic buildings, the Palacio de las Veletas and the Casa de los Caballos.
- Baluarte de los Pozos - A defensive tower from the Arab period that guarded the wells that supplied water to the city. As it is located on a hill, it is also an excellent viewpoint.
- Forum of the Balbos - A place of ancient origin. This is where the entrance to Norba Caesarina - the Roman predecessor of today's Cáceres - was located, while in medieval times the city assemblies were held here.
At the end of the tour you will enjoy a tasting that will give you the opportunity to try some Extremaduran specialities such as acorn-fed ham, the famous Torta del Casar or Técula Mécula, also known as Imperial Almond Cake.
