Step by Step
You'll clearly have seen it around Barcelona: the organic forms and fantastic structures of the brilliant Antoni Gaudí are all over the city. But if there's one place where Gaudí's work can be enjoyed in perfect harmony with nature, it's Park Güell. With tickets to this park you'll be able to explore the different areas at your own pace, discovering sculptures, columns and unique figures at every turn in a true visual spectacle. Are you up for it?
As soon as you arrive at Park Güell, you'll have the sensation of suddenly finding yourself in a world of fantasy. At one of its entrances you are greeted by "El drac", the emblematic figure of the multicoloured salamander. You will love its scales made of Trencadís ceramic mosaic. Make room on the steps to take the obligatory selfie!
But there is much more. These are some of the best spaces you will see in Park Güell:
- Sala Hipóstila: the steps of El Drac lead to this room. Here the more than 80 undulating columns and the geometric domed ceiling create the perception of being in an imaginary sea of waves.
- Another example of Gaudí's ingenuity in Park Güell is the Plaza de la Naturaleza or the Pórtico de la Lavandera. Again, the organic structures of the spaces and the colourful mosaics on the benches delight visitors.
- The Gaudí House Museum, the architect's former residence in Park Güell, where furniture and objects of his creation are preserved, can also be seen. Access to the interior is not included, however, and you will need a special ticket which you can buy there.
Park Güell covers an area of 19 hectares. In addition to its monumental area, it has a huge green area that you can also visit with your tickets. A stroll along its perfectly preserved paths will give you a clue as to why the park is not only the city's historical heritage, but also of great natural value. And did you know that Gaudí respected the orography and vegetation of the area to create this park in perfect harmony with nature?
It is not surprising that Eusebi Güell, the wealthy businessman after whom the park is named, took note of this unique setting in Barcelona and commissioned architect Antoni Gaudí to create what was initially a luxury residential project. Thanks to the failure of this project, by the way, it is now a public park that can be enjoyed by residents and tourists alike.
Its privileged location on the hill of Carmel, with unique views of both the city and the Mediterranean, offers spectacular panoramic views. Undoubtedly, the finishing touch to your experience in Barcelona's Park Güell. Simply fascinating!
