Step by Step

This ticket guarantees skip-the-line access to the Bioparco, the Eternal City's zoological garden. It is located in Villa Borghese, one of the most beautiful parks in Rome, and is one of the oldest in Europe. Not only will you see the many animals that live inside, but you will also learn to recognise the habitat of each one, the threats to the environment and an activity that you will have to book at the counter.

The Biopark opened in 1911 and was a real revolution. Previously, the animals were kept in cages while the architect Carl Hagenbeck, who supervised the project, decided to dig ditches so that they would be freer. Today it covers 17 hectares and is divided into themed areas. Below are the highlights:

  • California sea lions - Intelligent, lively mammals that splash about peacefully in a dedicated tank, just across the road from the Cape penguin area. They live on the west coast of the United States and Mexico, but their environment is threatened by plastic.
  • Grizzly bears - Originally found throughout the northern hemisphere, they are now threatened by habitat reduction. Their environment replicates a stream with logs and rocks.
  • Catta lemurs - recognisable by their voluminous tails with black and white rings. They live in groups in the forests of Madagascar.
  • White rhinos - This species threatened by poachers has found refuge in the Italian capital. The animals have a large mud puddle which they use to regulate their body temperature.
  • Asiatic lions - Compared to their African cousin, they have a smaller size, a shorter mane and a more social behaviour. At the Bioparco you can see them up close thanks to a thick glass window.

I am not in favour of keeping animals in captivity, but I must say that the Bioparco is very different from other zoos. It's almost like they live in their place of origin, respecting also the plants, which I liked a lot. The online booking of the tickets also saved me a lot of paperwork.

I knew that Bioparco is a reference for zoos in Europe, I was delighted to see it. For me it is one of the most beautiful places I have seen in Rome, especially for the effort to keep the animals as close to their habitat as possible. I definitely recommend it!
