Step by Step

This walking tour will allow you to discover the musical side of Bologna. The city has been the birthplace (or host) of great performers of Italian music, such as Lucio Dalla, Gianni Morandi and Guccini. At the same time, it is linked to lyric performers such as Mozart and Rossini. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours and takes you through the Old Town. An expert guide will accompany you to the following points:

  • Conservatorio Giovan Battista Martini - This was the first public music school in Italy. Among its most famous pupils was Gioacchino Rossini, who composed masterpieces such as "The Barber of Seville" and "Othello".
  • Teatro Comunale - It was built in 1756, as the previous one had been destroyed by fire. It is halfway between the two towers, symbol of Bologna, and the university.
  • Palazzo Carrati - 16th century palace which houses the Royal Philharmonic Academy. The concert hall is dedicated to Mozart, who was a member of this important institution. It is also famous for its frescoes and polychrome stained glass windows.
  • Archiginnasium - This building formerly housed the university, and inside is the Stabat Mater Hall. It was the aula magna, but was also used for opera concerts.
  • Basilica di San Petronio - The city's most famous church houses a 16th century organ. It was designed by Baldassarre Malamini, who probably learned to build these musical instruments from the best French artists.
  • La Strada del Jazz - A real walk of fame dedicated to the performers of this musical genre who have played in the city: Bill Evans, Miles Davies, Chet Baker, etc.

This urban route is easy to do and does not require exceptional fitness. For maximum comfort, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
