Athens, a city where past and present intertwine, not only shines for its impressive history, but also for the number of outdoor activities on offer. With a Mediterranean climate that invites you to enjoy the outdoors almost all year round, exploring Athens beyond its museums and ruins is a real pleasure. From bike rides among ancient monuments to excursions to mythical sites, there is something for everyone. In this article we suggest the best outdoor activities for you to experience Athens in a unique way.

1. Day cruise between islands

What better way to enjoy the Aegean Sea than by taking a day cruise? From Athens, you can embark on a cruise that will take you to explore nearby islands such as Hydra, Poros or Aegina. These excursions combine the serenity of the sea with the opportunity to discover charming seaside villages, crystal-clear beaches and irresistible Mediterranean cuisine.

Imagine strolling through bougainvillea-lined alleys in Hydra or taking a dip in the turquoise waters of Aegina. These cruises often include transportation from your hotel in Athens, meals on board and even activities such as snorkelling and guided tours.

2. Delphi excursion: a trip to the centre of the ancient world

Just two and a half hours from Athens lies Delphi, one of Greece's most iconic archaeological sites. Known in ancient times as the 'navel of the world', this place is ideal for an outdoor getaway that combines history and nature.

On your visit, you'll tour the Temple of Apollo, admire the views from the amphitheatre and stroll through postcard-perfect mountains. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes, as Delphi's trails offer an experience as enriching as its historical legacy.

3. Meteora: monasteries suspended in the sky

If you're looking for an experience that will leave you speechless, a trip to Meteora is a must. This ensemble of monasteries, built on impressive rock pillars, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place where spirituality and nature meet.

The tour will take you walking along paths that lead you to these monasteries suspended in the air, from where you will be able to contemplate landscapes that look like something out of a dream. Meteora is a little further from Athens, but many agencies organise day trips that include transport by bus or train.

4. Bicycle tour: Athens on wheels

Cycling around Athens is an exciting and sustainable way to explore the city. Many companies offer guided tours that allow you to discover iconic sites such as the Acropolis, the Agora and the Plaka neighbourhood, all while enjoying the fresh air.

The guides often include strategic stops to explain the history of the monuments and also to take spectacular photos. Moreover, the tours are usually suitable for all levels, so you don't need to be an experienced cyclist to enjoy this activity.

5. Mykonos getaway: beaches and charm at its best

Although Mykonos is often associated with its vibrant nightlife, this island is also a perfect destination for an outdoor getaway. From Athens, you can take a ferry or plane and spend a day exploring its pristine beaches, such as Psarou or Paradise Beach.

You can also stroll through the narrow white streets, enjoy the windmills at sunset or sample traditional dishes in a taverna by the sea. If you are looking for a combination of relaxation and adventure, Mykonos will not disappoint.

6. Mount Lycabettus hike: breathtaking views

Mount Lycabettus, the highest point in Athens, offers one of the best panoramic views of the city. A hike up its vegetation-fringed paths is an ideal activity for outdoor enthusiasts.

Once at the top, you can look out over the Acropolis, the Aegean Sea and, on clear days, even the Peloponnese mountains. If you prefer something less demanding, you can also take the funicular. Either way, you will enjoy an unforgettable sunset.

7. Relax in the National Gardens

If you're looking for a quiet spot in the heart of Athens, the National Gardens are your best option. This green oasis, located next to the Parliament, is ideal for strolling, picnicking or just enjoying a moment of peace among fountains, ponds and a variety of plants.

The park has shady paths perfect for escaping the summer heat and is a must if you're travelling with children, as there is a small play area and a duck pond they'll love.

Firstly the architectural sights are really breathtaking. The tour guide was absolutely excellent and conveyed a lot of information very efficiently. The audio system could do with an upgrade. Note also that you cover a lot of sights in one day - which is fantastic - but do be prepared for quite a fast pace! The lunch was also very tasty and good value. Overall this was a fantastic day and I would recommend.

The panoramic views and vibrant nightlife of Mykonos are incomparable, although the boat trip can be a little long for some.
