Step by Step

Explore the catacombs of Paris thanks to these tickets that will show you the dark side of the French capital. Built in 1788 to avoid the overcrowding of the city's cemeteries, they decided to take six million corpses to a quarry, whose skeletons are now on display . If you want to learn more about their history during the tour, you have the opportunity to use an audio guide.

A total of 131 steps down and 112 steps up await you to complete your tour of the 1,500-metre catacombs. Once inside, you will wander through this labyrinthine space in the form of tunnels 20 metres underground.

The Parisian authorities chose an easily accessible site which, at the time, was located outside the capital: the former quarries of Tombe-Issoire, under the Montrouge plain. The first evacuations took place from 1785 to 1787 and affected the largest cemetery in Paris, that of the Saints Innocents. The tombs, the mass graves and the ossuary were emptied.

In fact, this place was consecrated as the "Municipal Ossuary of Paris" on 7 April 1786, and from then on, it adopted the mythical name of "Catacombs", in reference to the Roman catacombs, which had fascinated the public since their discovery.
