Step by Step
Step into a unique experience with these tickets to the impressive Towers of La Rochelle, a monumental ensemble that has protected this French coastal city for almost a thousand years.
They are the historic remains of the ancient fortifications that guarded the city over the centuries, bravely facing enemies. Three of these towers still stand as witnesses to history, and since 1879 have been listed as Historic Monuments.
The Torre de las Cadenas, the first of them, owes its name to the chain that joined it to another tower, closing the entrance to the port. From its captaincy, port activities were supervised and rights of way were collected.
The Tower of San Nicolás is another jewel of the fortification. Legend has it that it was erected by the fairy Melusina, who, while transporting stones from a collapsed castle, dropped some of them, giving rise to this imposing structure. For centuries, it played a crucial role in the city' s coastal defence.
The Lanterne Tower, whose origins date back to the 12th century, completes this trio of wonders. It initially housed the "Shipbreaker of Ships", then served as a lighthouse guide for sailors, and later functioned as a prison. Your visit to these historic towers will be enriched by informative brochures that will further immerse you in their fascinating history and architecture.
