Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Copenhagen is to enjoy its food. The Danish capital is a city that has managed to establish itself as a top gastronomic destination, thanks to its wide range of restaurants and the creativity of its chefs. That's why a gastronomic tour will allow you to discover the city from one of its most unique sides. A visit to Copenhagen can't not include a stroll through its main markets, tasting its delicious food or enjoying its craft beer. That's why the best option is to sign up for a gastronomic walking tour. In this particular option, you will visit the Torvehallerne market, located on Frederiksborggade. Here you can sample some street food as well as fresh Danish food.

This is a small group tour (no more than 12 people), and only takes place at night, when the sun goes down. After a visit to Torvehallerne, you will have dinner with your group in a Danish restaurant of the highest standard. Here you will have the opportunity to continue tasting the flavours of Denmark, have a glass of wine and listen to the stories of your guide.

The evening ends by crossing the Dronning Louises Bro, a famous bridge that crosses the lakes and canals of Copenhagen and connects Frederiksborggade with Nørrebrogade. Nearby you'll stop at a brewery, where you can sample the best Danish beers and eat dessert. If the bridge has left you wanting to see more, I recommend one of Copenhagen's best canal tours.

  • Means of transport: it is a walking tour.

7. Avoid the queues at Copenhagen's famous Hard Rock Café.

The Hard Rock Café restaurant chain is one of the most famous in the world. With a range of truly delicious menus and an incomparable setting, dining or lunch at one of them is an experience not to be missed. Copenhagen's Hard Rock is no exception. As well as delicious burgers and drinks, you can see instruments that belonged to some of the biggest rock stars of all time.

You'll also enjoy live music and the best atmosphere. This is one of the most visited gastronomic spots in the city and one of the best things to do with kids in Copenhagen, as the whole family can relax and enjoy the best music. If you have teenagers, they'll love seeing guitars autographed by their idols.

With this option, you can skip the annoying queues and go straight to the lounge. This is something that never hurts when you're on holiday, especially if you're travelling with children, where every minute of waiting can spoil the moment.

Interesting details

  • Price: from 28 euros per person.
  • Duration: approximately 2 hours in total.
  • Means of transport: transport is not included as there is no route.
  • Advantages of this option: the menus on offer are very complete and you avoid the queues.
  • Disadvantages of this option: it is not a tour in itself, so you will only enjoy the classic American food offered by the Hard Rock Café.

8. Take a Danish pastry class

While not considered a tour, I think this is one of the ideal experiences for lovers of Danish cuisine, especially pastries and sweets. Take a private lesson with a local pastry chef and learn the art of making some of the most iconic Danish pastries.

This experience is perfect for those with a sweet tooth. You will learn how to make kanelsnegle (cinnamon rolls), Spandauer (Danish cake) and Frøsnapper (poppy seed and sesame twists). In addition, during the class you will receive everything you need to make these delicacies yourself, as well as the printed recipes. Your host will treat you to tea, to further enrich the experience.

These are typical meals for the colder seasons, so I recommend this class as one of the best things to do in Copenhagen in autumn.

Interesting details

  • Price: from 99 euros per person.
  • Duration: about 2 hours in total.
  • Means of transport: technically not a tour.
  • Advantages of this option: you will learn with a professional pastry chef and you will be able to taste what your hands make.
  • Disadvantages of this option: it only takes place in the morning.

Why is it advisable to take a food tour in Copenhagen?

Tasting Frøsnapper| ©Tavallai
Tasting Frøsnapper| ©Tavallai

It is recommended because gastronomy is always a great gateway to the culture of the country or city in question. In the specific case of Copenhagen, there are many flavours that have travelled around the world, so it is worth tasting its beers, its Smørrebrød, its kanelsnegle and feeling that we are part of the culture, that we understand a little more about the city through its dishes.

The Danish craft beers are much better than I thought, they have a unique taste that doesn't weigh you down, I bought some to share with my husband afterwards.
