10 Things to Do in Copenhagen in September
September is the start of autumn, and with it comes a wide variety of activities that you will love to enjoy. Here are some of the events not to be missed.
From attractive sports tournaments to technology conferences and festivals of ancient traditions, you'll find a wide variety of things to see and do in Copenhagen during September. But it's also a great time to visit the city and take beautiful pictures with the autumn foliage.
You'll love to take tours around the city to experience its early autumn colours and discover the other amazing activities Copenhagen has to offer.
1. Enjoy technology and good BBQ at TechBBQ
TechBBQ is one of the largest and most significant events of its kind in Scandinavia and is basically a gathering of tech and barbecue lovers, sharing thoughts, innovations and food.
This is a good opportunity to get a taste of that part of Danish cuisine that you don't get to see as much on a food tour of Copenhagen, which I also recommend.
During the event, you can participate in discussions about the latest technology trends, make valuable contacts in a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere, get inspired by speeches from industry-leading speakers and enjoy good old-fashioned barbecue, accompanied by delicious drinks.
Details of interest
- Price: To enter this event and enjoy all the attractions inside, you will have to pay around 745 euros.
- Date and time: Around the first fortnight of September every year. You can enjoy the barbecue for two days between 9:00 and 20:00.
- Location: at Otto Busses Vej 5A, 2450 København.
2. Attend Fredagsrock
Every Friday, open-air concerts take place in the Tivoli Gardens until the end of September as part of the Fredagsrock event. If you join in, you can enjoy great music in a beautiful setting, as the Tivoli Gardens are one of the main attractions of the Danish capital.
Best of all, it's a free festival where they play music for all tastes, from pop and rock to rap and jazz.
But I don't just recommend you go to the Tivoli Gardens for this event, I also recommend you set aside a few hours of your day to see it quietly in the daylight. Did you know that it is the oldest amusement park in Denmark and has one of the oldest roller coasters in the world? And in autumn, the greenery is more beautiful than ever.
3. Get to know the country better
How about a trip to the main Danish attractions outside the capital? In September the weather is still good enough to enjoy all that the country has to offer in the great outdoors, and the best thing is that you can do things that might be more in demand in high season and harder to find a place to do. You can also find better prices.
One example is to take a trip to the surrounding area and I suggest one of them: a trip to Roskilde, Frederiksborg and Kronborg, three must-see places in Denmark.
On this trip you'll see places like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare to write Hamlet, and the palace complex of Frederiksborg, one of the greatest representations of the Danish monarchy.
4. Make the most of the weather by bike
Obviously, summer is the best time to visit the capital of Denmark, but as always, the downside is that it's when you'll find the most tourists. Therefore, people who have availability and more flexibility prefer to travel to Copenhagen from May to September.
The weather is not as good, but it's still pleasant and it's the last chance to see the city before the freezing cold sets in. So it's the perfect time to take a bike tour of Copenhagen and discover the main sights without the crowds and in pleasant weather.
The best thing about this type of activity is that you are accompanied by a guide* who also tells you fun facts about the city so you can start to get to know it in depth and see it through different eyes.
5. Learn about social causes at the Golden Days Festival
The Golden Days Festival is a very important annual event in Denmark and each year the theme changes, but what is always the case is that each theme focuses on a situation of collective interest.
These events are usually held in the city centre square, which becomes the stage for a night full of music, dancing, lights and more.
You can also enjoy a variety of activities throughout the city, including exhibitions, film screenings, walks, theatre performances, talks, performances and more.

- Price: admission is free.
- Date and time: between the first and third week of September.
- Location: The main venue for this event is Nytorv Square.
6. Tour the city on the Copenhagen Tweed Ride
Copenhagen Tweed is an association that brings together many lovers of nostalgia, history, bicycles, vintage clothing and wool. Based on these concepts, the association promotes the Copenhagen Tweed Ride, which is a sporty and stylish event, where you can pedal through the city.
The aim is to promote good style in both behaviour and dress. During the bike ride, the organisers invite those interested to participate in the ride by dressing in a vintage style, evoking the old days and the Copenhagen of yesteryear.

- Price: around 20 euros per person.
- Date and time: during the second week of September between 9:00 and 21:00.

7. Experience poetry at the Literature Festival in Copenhagen
The Copenhagen Literature Festival is one of the most exciting events for literature lovers. It is an international festival that focuses mainly on international literature by Spanish and Portuguese-speaking authors.
The best thing about this activity is that you can participate in sessions in Spanish, Portuguese or Danish, as you wish. During the festival you can listen to poetry readings, book presentations and attend a small book fair with new publications.
Basically, this is a non-profit event that you will enjoy being part of and learn more about the different cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries.
Interesting details
- Price: all activities at this event are free of charge.
- Date and time: during the afternoon hours. In 2023 it was organised on 28 and 29 September.

8. Enjoy great music at the Haydn Festival
At this festival you will have the opportunity to enjoy the orchestra of a great Danish musician who gives an annual series of concerts dedicated to the composer Joseph Haydn.
Joseph Haydn is considered one of the greatest figures of European music. Despite the importance of this great musician for European musical development, history has tended to place his works in the shadow of other composers such as Mozart and Beethoven.
Nowadays, thanks to the festival that takes place every year in Copenhagen, you have the opportunity to enjoy Haydn's music, to discover his exciting and subtle symphonic universe in a musical journey that you will not forget.
